The clients had a very specific vision for this home that included large, comfortable spaces for their guests and family. I knew they wanted a tropical getaway and a sense of informality, and that the site - on a stretch of coastline along the Gulf of Mexico - would offer spectacular views. So I drew what basically became an extended L-shaped plan, keeping the landscape in mind. There is grandeur about this plan, yet the house easily takes in scenery, and the courtyard, loggia, terrace and decks expand the living areas into the outdoors.

Located on Sanibel Island with rear views oriented toward the Gulf of Mexico, the house enjoys an informal elegance that prevails throughout its open interior. Flow and function are intimately connected in the plan, with easy transitions between public and private realms. Fluid spaces defined by views of the water framed with groves of Gumbo Limbo trees enhance the sense of openness. Casual and formal rooms flex to accommodate family gatherings and planned events, and mitered windows and sliding doors provide links to the lanai. On the upper level, a luxurious retreat dedicated to the private use of the owners includes an observation deck a glass sitting bay with panoramic views of the Gulf.
